Wes Ball describes how a multi-movie story is built up by the latest installment in the franchise: "We’ve got good ideas for what would come next."
Unbeknownst to him, filmmaker Wes Ball trained during his early years to helm the science-fiction saga that started with the 1968 film starring Charlton Heston, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The director remembers, "I was born in 1980, but for some reason, I grew up watching that original '68 version a lot."
The planet on which this current story is set is far more similar to the one that Heston's astronaut traveled through time than it was to anything that was seen in the most recent reboot of the franchise. These days, Simians rule over a world that has technologically regressed to a bygone era. A large portion of humanity has been destroyed by disease, and those that remain are deaf and dumb.
Ball says that his film is set many years after the previous installment in the series, Matt Reeves' 2017 picture War for the Planet of the Apes, which was the third big-screen story to center on the ape Caesar, portrayed by Andy Serkis with the help of computer graphics.
"It's many, many generations later," says Ball. "We're going to rediscover things in our movie that were lost during the Dark Ages, which occurred in the interval between the previous film and this one.on this grand adventure."
Another chimpanzee named Noa, portrayed by Owen Teague, who has been in the It films and the 2020 TV series The Stand, is the animal we follow on that journey. Ball characterizes the figure as neither a child nor an adult. He's just about to transform into the ape he will become," he explains. It's about him entering a world he doesn't know by chance and finding himself in these strange circumstances.
In EW's exclusive first look at Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Teague's Noa and his two chimpanzee friends, Travis Jeffery's Anaya and Lydia Peckham's Soona, are highlighted.
Ball, the director of the three Maze Runner films, explains, "They live in this small, isolated tribe and were raised together." In the scene where they are reading from a book, the director alludes to the fact that it is a particular chapter in Noa's trip and depicts the three of them as "looking at something that they don’t understand."
Proximus, a chimpanzee portrayed by Kevin Durand that sounds like a futuristic Thomas Edison or possibly Elon Musk, is the antagonist of the movie. Ball claims, "The intriguing thing about Proximus is that he's rediscovered electricity, although with little assistance. That seems like a magical ability for apes who have forgotten about all of these things. Thus, they are testing it out. You can't even call him a villain, in my opinion. He is, in my opinion, an opponent. You can sort of relate to him; you get him. It's a compelling figure that goes beyond a cutout who can spin a mustache."

"I have many excellent concept painters in my group. We just ponder while we sit there," the director remarks. One of those pictures made me think, "Oh, that feels like this movie," with the character teetering on the edge of an unfamiliar universe. These ruins are mountains to him because they have existed forever. He doesn't know who made them, where they originated from, or even whether they were constructed at all."
Ball has stated that a live-action version of the well-liked video game The Legend of Zelda will probably be his next picture. However, the filmmaker is eager to produce more monkey business and thinks Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes might be the beginning of a new multi-movie story.
"We wish to avoid becoming conceited. The film gods will decide whether or not this picture is a hit."However, we firmly believe that there is still a ton of story to be told—not just about the history of Planet of the Apes but also about the characters we've developed and the storylines we have in mind. Thus, indeed, we have some excellent suggestions about what could happen next."
On May 24 of next year, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be released in theaters.
