The movie synopsis of Ayalaan states that an extraterrestrial must work with a kind-hearted young guy to thwart a cunning tycoon whose project could wipe out the world.
Review of the film Ayalaan: The grandiose notion of time travel was given a local flavor by director Ravikumar in Indru Netru Naalai. He accomplishes the same thing in Ayalaan as well, portraying a science fiction story about aliens on Earth as a uniquely Tamil film. The film features all the essential elements of Tamil cinema, such as an enticing hero introduction song, romance, a couple of comics playing the hero's sidekicks, a corporate villain portrayed by a northern actor (Shad Kelkar in this case), a hint of motherly love, and even themes about organic farming. The last scene was a mainstay of big-hero movies from 2015 to 2020, when this movie was being made. It has since become outdated, but surprisingly, it works well in this movie because the main message is about conserving the environment.
Ayalaan is an entertaining picture for all ages because of the twists that Ravikumar adds to notions that we have seen in countless Hollywood films: superpowers, UFOs, extraterrestrials, powerful robots, femme fatales, and large-scale destruction. He used the extraterrestrial, Tattoo, as a delightful cartoon figure in the first half, creating a sense of wonder and humor that appeals to both children and the child in all of us. The filmmaking matches the inventiveness of the writing, which deftly keeps bringing back characters and elements from the first half in the second in ways that effectively advance the plot. The fact that the visual effects are mainly seamless just serves to heighten the wonder.
But there are problems with the movie. Some scenes in the second half, such as a chase on a highway (even AR Rahman's score is generic here) and the conclusion, could have used a little more punch. The scene transitions aren't seamless, and the villain doesn't appear lethal enough. However, just when things start to appear a little lackluster, we have some really thrilling times that make us focus too much on the unsuccessful things.
