Story: Ben and Bea decide they aren't a match after a horrible first date. But at an Australian destination wedding, fate throws them back together, and they have to pretend to be a couple in love.
Examine: Shakespeare is frequently cited as an inspiration by romantic comedy writers when they are at a loss for ideas. Inspired somewhat by "Much Ado About Nothing," "Anyone But You" is an uninteresting romantic comedy with little substance. With a weak screenplay, the movie gives its performers very little chance to explore roles outside of the norm. Although the movie's concept seems solid in theory, it was poorly executed, making for uncomfortable and difficult-to-watch parts. The movie doesn't make you laugh, even for its genre, and the love aspects are unclear and complicated.
The story of the movie revolves around Ben (Glen Powell) and Bea (Sydney Sweeney), who fall in love right away when they meet for the first time at a café. But due to a misunderstanding, Bea ends up spending the night at Ben's house and quickly learns that they are not meant to be together. They run to see each other again during an Australian destination wedding, where their presence causes such mayhem that guests plot to unite them. The well-laid plans, however, collapse when Bea makes a disclosure that causes everyone to realize they are not a couple.
The purportedly amazing chemistry between Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, who genuinely relish their love-hate dynamics, is the only bright spot in the movie. But let's face it, with the film failing in almost every way possible, this charm isn't exactly a showstopper for audiences. The filmmakers obviously tried to emulate the success of movies such as "Addicted to Love," "You've Got Mail," and "My Best Friend's Wedding." Sadly, the movie is devoid of any component that would allow it to be admitted into such a prestigious cinematic society. The conversations are excruciatingly banal, and the scenes? To put it mildly, they're just as exciting as seeing paint dry.
Although Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney have given their performances their all, it's important to remember that the scripts they were given were mediocre at best. The lack of depth and predictable sense of a movie where all the characters are gorgeous and well-off make it feel like another one. The rom-com is over the top, crammed with clichés, and it lacks the warmth and wit that distinguish good romantic comedies. Avoid this one to save yourself the trouble.
