The Family Plan Movie Review: You have to approach every scene in The Family Plan with a certain amount of skepticism since it's such an amazing movie. When watching the movie, it's best to just go with the flow and not worry too much about whether or not anything makes sense. Imagine this moment from the movie, where Mark Wahlberg's character is traveling through the night toward Las Vegas. His family is sound asleep in the backseat, completely oblivious to the shooting and tire screeching that is happening right outside their windows. One by one, Wahlberg takes out his assailants, and when the family awakens, not a hair is missing from the car, and there's not even the slightest trace of doubt in their eyes. You should only watch this movie if you're in the mood for something goofy. It's worth seeing this holiday season if you're up for some mindless adventure and ridiculousness as well as Mark Wahlberg's action-packed antics.
The story centers on auto salesman Dan (Mark Wahlberg), who finds comfort in his suburban life and enjoys the good life with his wife Jess (Michelle Monaghan), son Kyle (Van Crosby), daughter Nina (Zoe Margaret Colletti), and the newest member of the family, newborn Maxie. Jess is unaware that Dan has a secret history as a government agent who is adept at taking out tyrants and mercenaries all around the world. His hidden past is kept safely hidden from his family until an innocent-looking social media photo of Dan and Jess appears, setting off a swift unraveling of his hidden history. A regular trip to the department store turns terrifying, forcing Dan to face the impending threat and realize he has to protect his family.
The streaming service made a smart choice by releasing this movie during the holidays, when people are more mellow and receptive to lighter material.Any other season's release of this movie might have been met with harsh criticism. Sadly, the film's plot is so tattered that it feels like a throwback to action movies from the 1980s and lacks the depth necessary to interest viewers today. Dan's mysterious past is a crucial component that has not been fully addressed. The film only skims the surface, leaving viewers to puzzle about his father's inexplicable desire to drag him back into a life of deadly adventures. The Family Plan falls short when compared to movies starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, such as True Lies and Kindergarten Cop.
Although Mark Wahlberg plays Dan with conviction and sincerity, his efforts are let down by the weak screenplay. He moves between being a loving family man with a mysterious past as an expert assassin with the ease of a dedicated father. Michelle Monaghan, who plays the wife Jess, does a respectable job depicting a someone who is steadfast in her beliefs and incredibly in love with her spouse. When Maggie Q's Gwen shows off her frightening side, the actress dazzles. The movie's weak point, though, is its unimpressive antagonist, who comes out as pathetic and unenthusiastic. The performance of Ciarán Hinds as McCaffrey falls flat with the audience.
The lighthearted comedic scenarios involving family members are where the picture gets its footing, surpassing the scenes where Mark Wahlberg is fully transformed into an assassin. Stories with moments like Dan setting speed records while changing his diaper or letting his daughter meet his boyfriend at the university add a fun and playful element to the story. Here, action star Mark Wahlberg—who is renowned for his ability to combine humor and action—gets to show off his skills. Unfortunately, a narrative that can only be described as dull undermines his admirable efforts. It might be best to treat it like a lighthearted comedy and ignore the action elements.
