Review of Pathaan: As a kind of event movie, Pathaan has Shah Rukh Khan returning to the big screen after a four-year hiatus. It's an ambitious action thriller that lives up to the expectations and plays to a large audience. Though it is written in a fantastical way, Pathaan has a lot of star power and style. At first, it feels like a Hollywood-style Mountain Dew advertisement that gradually gains momentum.
The story revolves around India's withdrawal of Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370 and how it affects a Pakistani commander who demands that India pay for this "mistake." He makes contact with the strong Jim, an ex-RAW agent who was harmed by his own people.His gorgeous partner Rubai, an ex-ISI agent with dubious motivations (Deepika Padukone), joins him. As they jump countries and engage in a risky game of betrayal and retaliation, Pathaan, Jim, and Rubai lock horns and exchange glances. The three compete to both destroy and defend the worlds they hold dear.
Siddharth Anand, the director, treats his spy thriller in an extravagant manner. He portrays it more like a superhero movie that demands a great deal of suspension of disbelief. It's clear from this that he is a huge lover of big Hollywood blockbusters, such as Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible series or Marvel movies.Expect a femme fatale, a wingsuit à la Falcon, over-the-top action and chase scenes, death-defying stunts involving cars, bikes, ice, and helicopters, immortal heroes and villains mouthing pithy speech, and a whole lot of patriotism.
For the most portion of the movie, action takes precedence over emotions, which is novel for Shah Rukh Khan, who is best known for his romantic or conversational parts. It's fascinating how, at the age of 57, he still acts like a full-fledged action hero, letting his body and his intensely expressive eyes do the talking. His presence is what saves a mediocre screenplay and VFX.Although the background soundtrack doesn't perfectly match the scenes, Vishal & Shekhar's music for the movie does a good job of capturing the bravery and heroism on show.
John Abraham's excellent portrayal of Jim is another one of Pathaan's highlights. John is scary and presents a classic example of the villain occasionally overshadowing the hero, whether it's through his disguised entrance like to Bane or his stunt scenes.
Though her connection with SRK feels undercooked, Deepika Padukone is a natural as the devoted, double-crossing, ethically dubious leggy spy.It lacks the same spark as the characters created by John-SRK. Dimple Kapadia delivers another Tenet, giving the proceedings the much-needed emotional weight and depth. You wish more characters had the same level of genuineness as her.
As Bhai meets the badshah, the YRF spy universe brings Karan and Arjun back together (wink wink) for an unforgettable whistle moment. If you are willing to overlook the frivolity in dialogues like ‘You are pretty screwed’, Pathaan has all the ingredients of a masala potboiler — slowmo entries, iconic battle of good versus bad and most importantly, a sexy-smouldering Shah Rukh Khan, who can fight the good fight on and off the screen. He remains the unchallenged King.
