Two weeks ahead of schedule, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will hit theaters, Legendary and Warner Bros. announced on Tuesday.
Instead of opening on April 12, the fifth entry in their MonsterVerse series will now open on March 29.
Godzilla x Kong is taking over the date that Bong Joon Ho, the Academy Award-winning director, was originally planning to release Mickey 17, but post-strike production changes are delaying that release. It is anticipated that the feature will shortly have a new date revealed. (The change was somewhat expected because the movie hasn't yet had a trailer.)
The most recent full-length picture in Warner Bros./Legendary Entertainment's MonsterVerse is based on the events of Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), in which audiences witnessed the ultimate battle between the two ultimate kaijus. The movie's teaser portrays Godzilla x Kong exploring the mysteries of the Hollow Earth and revealing a Titan threat that will require Godzilla and Kong to team together.
Returning to the director's chair for Godzilla vs. Kong, Adam Wingard reunites with Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle. In The New Empire, Dan Stevens takes on a leading role in the franchise.
Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017), and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) are more titles in the franchise. The property has also been adapted for television, with the live-action series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023) airing on Apple TV+ and the anime series Skull Island (2023) available on Netflix.
