The unsatisfactory assessments of Napoleon, which suffered from historical errors and over-the-top extravaganza, lessened the anticipation surrounding Gladiator 2.
There are questions over whether Gladiator 2 can equal the popularity of Gladiator, which drew viewers in and made them care about the characters.

Gladiator 2 is still one of the most anticipated movies of 2024, but because of its 2023 release, the hype around it has partially subsided. In contrast to the first Gladiator film, which centers on Maximus, the main character of Gladiator 2 will be Lucius, Commodus's nephew, who made a fleeting cameo as a little kid in the first film. Gladiator 2 is releasing more than 20 years after the first movie, but due to the classic movie's enduring appeal, there is a lot of excitement surrounding its premiere.
The majority of the plot information for the film is still unknown. But the rumors about the cast and behind-the-scenes changes for Gladiator 2 have effectively created enough buzz to warrant a late 2024 release. Regretfully, despite the fact that Gladiator 2 appears to have a lot going for it, one 2023 film may have taken away some of the excitement.
Napoleon, which was helmed by Ridley Scott and written by David Scarpa, first appeared to have the makings of one of the most celebrated and excellent plays of 2023. Napoleon, however, has received a very poor Rotten Tomatoes score of 61% from reviewers and 60% from spectators (via RT) since its premiere. Many have criticized the film for its glaring historical mistakes and excessive focus on spectacle. With a strong cast and excellent production values, what was expected to be an epic historical drama has instead become a divisive movie that is unlikely to be remembered. Napoleon's inability to make an impression not only demonstrates that a gifted director-writer team like Scrapa and Scott are not always able to deliver, but it also detracts from the excitement of Gladiator 2.
Given that Gladiator 2 is a historical drama, like Napoleon, and that David Scarpa and Ridley Scott are reuniting for the film, one cannot help but question if the screenwriter and director will be able to replicate the first Gladiator's level of popularity. The original Gladiator, which was helmed by Ridley Scott and penned by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson, was less historically accurate than Napoleon and took several artistic licenses. Gladiator, on the other hand, was able to succeed where Napoleon was unable because it managed to make viewers root for its main character. Is Gladiator 2 going to be able to match its predecessor? This question is raised by Napoleon's failure to evoke the same emotional response in spectators and critics as Gladiator.
Despite all of the worries, Gladiator 2 is probably going to be fantastic because, even though it will have a new Gladiator as its title, fans will undoubtedly feel nostalgic for the Roman backdrop and the characters they are familiar with. Napoleon's ensemble is excellent. But the cast of Gladiator, which stars Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Fred Hechinger, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, May Calamawy, Lior Raz, Peter Mensah, and Matt Lucas, is maybe even more remarkable. Gladiator 2 also has a significant storytelling edge because its predecessor has already planted the roots of a complex storyline. Gladiator 2, which is slated to release two decades after Maximus's passing, already looks fascinating since it will examine the long-term effects of Maximus' passing on the Roman Empire.
